A Bit About Me

Hi, my name is Kathryn and I am the Managing Director of Clever Little Bees. I am a trained primary school teacher and have taught in both New Zealand and the UK. Clever Little Bees has begun as a result of wanting to combine my two passions - teaching and bees!

For years, I was fascinated listening to bee-related stories from a commercial beekeeper when taking a breather during our latin dance classes. Then in 2018, my passion for apiculture really began when a friend showed me her apiary. In that moment, time stopped as I watched her bees fly into their hive with their colourful pollen baskets. They were so mesmerising to watch. Just like that, I decided that I too wanted my own apiary and the very same day, I bought myself a bee suit.

Within the space of a year, I started helping my friend with her hive, acquired my own colony of bees, and enrolled at Otago Polytechnic to gain a New Zealand Certificate in Apiculture.

After completing my Level 3 New Zealand Certificate in Apiculture, I realised that there are many others like me who are fascinated with bees and the way in which they live and work as a colony. I realised I could use my vast experience as a teacher to educate others on educational practices relating to bees. I launched Clever Little Bees, a hands-on apiculture course to teach primary school children and adults the basics of beekeeping. Being able to combine my passions of teaching and apiculture brings a smile to my face as I share my love of bees with others in the hope that they too will find them as enthralling as I do!
